Has been asked by his team if he thinks he can improve. With a slipstream yes, he says. Without one, not. Wonder if we'll see anyone really going for it and losing a second timed lap?

Everyone has set a lap time, now. T rying to give it a go, without the tow. Gasly, on his second attempt, goes eighth, just behind Lance Stroll.

Leclerc looking okay here if not that great. Only P11 and he's 0. Albon now has his lap deleted, so drops down to P F our drivers with their laps deleted, including Lance Stroll.

F ormer F1 and current IndyCar driver Marcus Ericsson weighed in on Twitter on the potential qualifying chaos, with cars backing up and jostling for position to get the advantage of the slipstream.

Flick: "Haben eine Serie, die wollen wir ausbauen" Nagelsmann zum Einzug ins Achtelfinale: "Wieder ein Zeichen gesetzt" Petersburg und Leipzig Marco Rose: "Real Madrid wird Druck haben" Vettel may also have his time deleted as he looked like he ran too far wide and off circuit at the Parabolica.

At least in my eyes anyway Charles Leclerc, picking up a Renault tow, goes quickest from Hamilton but seconds later the red flags come out as Raikkonen has spun off at the entrance to Parabolica, crashing the Alfa Romeo backwards in the barrier.

Mercedes were first out, but they stopped at the end of the pit-lane to allow Ferrari to lead the way. Vettel is the front man but Leclerc won't benefit from the tow as they are separated by the two Renaults.

Hamilton will get a tow from Bottas in this session, but who is going to play second fiddle down at Ferrari?

Someone at Ferrari will have to prevent Lewis nailing his fifth pole position in six years. Worth noting that while Carlos Sainz has gone nine tenths quicker than Norris, it was down to his McLaren giving him a slipstream tow.

Playing the team game Lewis Hamilton goes fastest - the first time this weekend for Mercedes - as he benefits from the Valtteri Bottas slipstream.

Both Ferraris made errors on their final lap and elected to pit. Most importantly for them though is they are through to the pole position shootout.

The slipstream battle is on. With two minutes and 12 seconds left, every single car leads the garage as Alex Albon pulls the pin in the Red Bull to give everyone a tow.

Daniil Kvyat is the man on the bubble. Big cheers from the Tifosi as Leclerc goes fastest once more in the first round of runs, just ahead of Hamilton, Vettel and Ricciardo.

Less than three tenths separate those four. Great to still see Renault up there. No medium tyres for Ferrari in this session - all the drivers have opted for the soft compound in this session.

Well if you are going to suffer engine problems, now is the time for Verstappen. As he starts from the back anyway, a Honda gremlin now won't ruin his weekend but it does mean he ends the session without a time and propping up the grid.

That of course means Perez is out of qualifying as he is in 17th and the elimination zone - which still features Verstappen who has yet to run.

We are back underway again His Racing Point has spluttered to a halt shortly after the first corner and is placed on the inside of track in a dangerous position with four minutes and 34 seconds of the session left.

Max Verstappen will start the race from the back tomorrow due to engine penalties and he is the only driver yet to set a lap. Charles Leclerc is the current fastest driver, with Hulkenberg second, just 0.

They are the only cars on the medium tyre too - with the rest including Mercedes opting for the soft. Leading the way at the moment is a Renault , and I haven't said that since about And at a track like Monza, where the cars have wings trimmed down as far as the teams dare, the advantage of a good slipstream can be as much as 0.

No wonder then, that no one wanted to be the driver at the front of the pack, making life easier for the cars behind, while getting none of the benefits themselves.

But to be honest I don't think anyone expected it to be that bad. What happened in Monza is nothing new. A similar thing happened at a number of races this year, and in Shanghai a handful of drivers also missed out on their final lap after jostling for position on the outlap.

The teams are fully aware of the benefit to be found from getting a tow, and as a result play chicken with one another to make sure they are not the one leaving the pits first.

In Baku, where a good tow effectively secured Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas the front row over Sebastian Vettel, new tactics evolved as Mercedes sent its cars out of the garage first but ordered them to make a practice start at the end of the pit lane so that they would drop back into the middle of the pack.

The same thing happened on the first run in Q3 in Monza and, again, it was Vettel who decided not to get caught up in the brinkmanship and ended up breaking clear at the front of the queue to get a clean, non-slipstream lap by himself.

The lap itself was good, but in a demonstration of how valuable a tow is at Monza, he finished 0. The situation that played out at the end of Q3 was entirely predictable -- so much so that the FIA had warned teams ahead of the session that it would clamp down on anyone going too slowly on outlaps.

Whether the cars were in breach of that is hard to tell without the data and an explanation of what was happening on track, but after the anticlimax of seven drivers missing their final run in Q3, a message popped up on the timing screens that the final outlap was under investigation by the stewards.

A similar scenario in Friday's F3 qualifying led to the session being red flagged and 16 of the 30 drivers getting penalties for driving unnecessarily slowly.

Nico Hulkenberg was cleared of deliberately skipping the first chicane but was soon under another investigation, this time along with Lance Stroll and Carlos Sainz, for driving slowly on the final outlap.

Hulkenberg and Sainz were both at the front of the queue as the drivers started the lap and that resulted in all nine cars bottling up in the Curva Grande.

These situations have made a big mess towards the end and that's why some cars didn't make it to start their laps.

Eventually the pit walls started to radio the drivers to tell them to speed up or risk missing the start of their lap, but by that point it was already too late for everyone but Sainz and Leclerc.

Late on Saturday evening it was confirmed Hulkenberg, Sainz and Stroll had escaped with a reprimand. The stewards felt each driver "played a significant role in the banking up of cars at a critical stage of the final out lap for Q3" and that each had admitted to driving unnecessary slowly, while pointing out that everyone in the cluster of cars had done the same thing.

Interestingly, the verdict also included the following line: "The Stewards strongly recommend that the FIA expedite a solution to this type of situation.
